PTM Notes / Positioning

A niche is a signal, not a cage.

The useful kind of niche makes the right people understand why they should stay. It does not ask a creator to become smaller than they are.

The word “niche” can make creative people nervous. It sounds like a box: one subject, one format, one audience, repeated until the work loses its pulse.

The false choice

Most creators are offered two unhelpful options. Be broad and become forgettable, or be narrow and become predictable. Neither is the real job of positioning.

A strong niche is a signal. It helps the right person recognise a point of view quickly. It gives the work a centre of gravity without deciding every sentence, image or idea in advance.

Specific enough to be remembered. Open enough to keep becoming.

Three parts of a useful signal

  1. Subject: the territory you return to, such as beauty, movement, travel, intimacy, design, comedy or something only you can name.
  2. Point of view: the feeling or belief that shapes how you approach that territory.
  3. Promise: the reason someone knows what kind of experience they will get when they come back.

These parts create coherence without requiring repetition. The audience is not seeing the same post again; they are learning the shape of a world.

What to do next

Look at the last ten pieces of work. Not to rank them, but to notice the patterns you would want a thoughtful stranger to remember. Which subjects keep returning? What tone appears even when the format changes? What do people ask you for without being prompted?

That is the beginning of a position. It is not a prison. It is a door.
